Subject = actress Louise Brooks from her role in the 1929 movie The Canary Murder Case
I placed a colorized version of this drawing in my scraps
Media = Illustrator and Photoshop.
(However, all of this was drawn in Illustrator
. Photoshop was used only to put the separate Illustrator files together, shrink the drawing's overall size, and to save it.)
I drew Brooks in one file, and because that file was choking up, I used a second, separate file for the feathers in the back of her costume.
However, when I tried to copy and paste the feathers into the first drawing (of Brooks), nothing appeared.
The area where the feathers should've appeared in the file was blank.
When I clicked on where the feathers should be, the outlines
appeared, but the shades of grey were not showing up (so for all means and purposes, it was empty space).
My working space in Illustrator was in preview mode (I also tried "overprint"), not in outline mode, so that was not the issue.
This has happened to me before when working on other drawings, and the only solution I've been able to use is to drag the art into Photoshop.Tools used in Illustrator for this drawing:
I predominantly used the pen tool.
I also used gradient mesh, the standard gradient tool, the transparency panel, pathfinder panel (divide), and clipping masks.
Because the gradient mesh tool would not work on her upper torso (the software gave me a warning dialog box that the path was "too complex" or "had too many points"), so that I used the pen tool to draw shadow and highlight shapes on her body.
I then made blends, but they looked too "blocky," so I ran the SVG filters that ship with the software, which softened the shapes.
Her face was done entirely with basic shapes and gradient mesh.
The value variation on the front leg was mainly created with the gradient mesh tool, but an SVG blur effect was used on a couple of pen-created shapes that are on the leg.
I have no idea if the SVG effects in Illustrator are considered vector, vexel, bitmap, (or what exactly), so I guess when submitting this to various groups I'll have to place it in 'mixed media' type folders. Reference Photo
